We spent many months engaged with vantagepoint and I guess the best way to put it is that if you take all of the negative post above and you edited them into one post, that would sum up our experience.

This is one of the larger funds around after the bubble burst with a decidedly mixed reputation. There is nothing to be mixed about. If you enjoy treatment like a sock puppet CEO, then you may be a perfect investment fit. Salzman runs your company, whether he is on your Board on not, as someone else points out. Read on...

They Play the Venture Game Well

This doesn't mean they are good at helping you build your company, since they aren't.
The game is, start a small fund, have a super hit deal, then drive out the partner who had the hit, raise a ton of cash, collect huge fees each year from the limited partners, then tell the Ltd's that there aren't any good companies to invest in or that the entrepreneurs are too greedy.
They will only be lying to you when their lips are moving. Their culture has been set from the top.

We pitched late on a Friday afternoon. The room was inattentive and distracted. The follow-up was essentially valueless. No feedback.

Looks like the venture capitalists from VantagePoint felt that the team from 3Guppies needed to be free from work obligations during the holidays even though ~$8 MM was in the bank. So thoughtful.

We recently closed a round with VantagePoint. Based on my experience working with Melissa Guzy, I can say that she is very supportive of entrepreneurs and have a long term view on things. She also understands the importance of the human interaction, i.e. it is not just about business.
I recommend working with her if you have a chance.

I have worked with Richard and the bottom line is that he is very sharp, truly understands the Internet space, and spends a great deal of time helping his portfolio companies. He is a straight shooter and very entrepreneurial. Perhaps most importantly, he was a great asset in strategizing as to partnerships, syndication deals, SEO, SEM, traffic, content deals, and more. He was actively involved in making introductions and helping to consummate deals with brand name strategic media and Internet partners. He gets it from the entrepreneur's perspective and how hard it is to build a successful company, and he helps out in many ways to achieve that success. I would have him on my Board again in a heartbeat.

Andy Sheehan has recently joined Sutter Hill Ventures in Palo Alto. He's a very bright guy and a class act. His transfer helps an already strong firm (SHV) and weakens VPVP.

Everyone knows that Alan is the only guy that can really make a decision and have it stick with the other partners. Alan puts a lot of stock in what Bandel and the rest of the guys at Oak are doing.

Big partnership with big money. Done a lot of semi and hardware deals. They have specialized into sub-groups that focus on hardware, services, etc. But somehow you need to get multiple groups to agree on funding"""
Kudos to them for investing in Tesla Motors though!!! Very cool.
