Didn't Fund Me but I Was Very Impressed!

Fund: IDG Ventures SF

PUBLIC:

IDG was one of the venture funds we met with while pursuing our Series B funding. We didn't get a term sheet from IDG (although we did successfully complete our $8 million Series B) but I was thoroughly impressed with the entire crew at IDG. Phil, Pat and Alex were great to talk to, clearly had solid experience that was relevant to our sector. They did engage deeply, doing extensive diligence. When they passed on our deal, it was clear why they did and why it wasn't a fit for their fund. We ended up with a successful exit of our company earlier this year, and our positive relationship with IDG has continued.

I recently met again with Phil to catch up and talk about what I would be doing next (after exiting my last venture). He was great to talk to and bounce ideas off of and made some excellent introductions that I am certain will be helpful as we get our new venture off the ground.

Good Experience

PUBLIC:

Alex Rosen was an investor and board member in my prior company. He led our Series B round, and also took the lead in supporting us in a follow-on financing in a difficult time. He has great expertise in e-commerce and consumer web in general, and offers a high level of technical savvy as well. As a board member, he was always accessible, direct, and hard-working. Alex brought us valuable contacts, including an outside industry board member. My current business is in the clean technology industry, so it is outside the focus of IDG Ventures, but I continue to get helpful advice from Alex. I would recommend Alex and his firm to any entrepreneur without hesitation.

Smart, Connected, Helpful

PUBLIC:

Alex Rosen invested in our Series A round (and subsequent follow-ons). He has been super responsive, very helpful, and easy to work with over the years. Since Alex invested, I've met all the partners and found them to really understand what it takes to build a consumer web business. The have good knowledge of the media world and great connections (especially international). Would go back to them with my next company.

Knowledgeable and Helpful

PUBLIC:

I have found everyone at IDG to be very knowledgeable about the realities of our business (games/entertainment). Their publishing experience is a great added value from both a connections and experience standpoint. As an experienced former CEO Pat Kenealy offers sound advice about operations and strategy. Phil Sanderson has served on our board and seems to know everyone in our space as well as being on top of what other companies are doing. Alex Rosen is a very astute business person who challenges assumptions when they should be challenged. IDG has been great to work with and has helped and pushed us to grow the company over the last 4 years.

Great Partner

PUBLIC:

Alex Rosen was my Board member for my company and led the bridge round that we completed while CEO.

I have only positive feedback for Alex and his partners Pat and Phi at IDGV. Alex is very direct with feedback but handles it in a positive way. I always felt that he was supportive and helpful and if he said he would do something for you, he would do it. I was always impressed with his ability to understand the details of the business without getting in the way of my attempts to execute. A very supportive partner overall.

Easy to Work with and Well Connected

PUBLIC:

We did a Series B with IDG Ventures, and it was a great experience. Deal closed quickly, paperwork and terms were extremely fair (as they promised they would be). I don't think it could have gone any better.

Since we closed the round, they've been a great partner and Phil Sanderson has been a terrific board member. They've been very hands-on and supportive. They've helped us recruit, make introductions to key people and we've received big discounts on IDG properties (ie. Macworld).

Very Good Experience

PUBLIC:

I met with all three partners recently, and found them to be very helpful. Their candor and insight was very constructive, and has helped our plans. We do not seek funding from VC firms on our first visit. Our approach is to get to know them first, to see what value they can add in building our company. I came away with a clear sense that IDG Ventures SF would be a strong addition to any round we might put together in the next few months. They know the social media space very well, and they have realistic expectactions about exit paths in the current environment.
