Fair Initial Terms But Beware In Subsequent Rounds

Initial decision process was reasonable. Willing to do convertible debt. But, CAUTION, they behave in ways that unfavorably impacts later financings.

Early investor, provided strong support through a difficult subsequent funding round. Lahann is a particularly high integrity professional. A pleasure to work with, a valuable board member.

Pitched them, got terms, didn't like them, so they invested in a competitor. Be very very careful not to divulge too much or else you could end up regretting it..

I've had the opportunity to work with Yogen on two companies. Frankly, I could not say enough good things about him. I really liked the firm and would definitely put them at the top of my list for my next company.

Pitched two parters Rahul Saxena, Tuff Yen and an associate earlier in the year. The associate was the only one in the room with any understanding of our solution and market. No intelligent questions from the partners, No follow-up, waste of time.

The entire financing process with S3 Ventures from beginning to end exceeded my expectations. In particular, working with Brian and Steve has been a pleasure and has helped make us a better company. Although our deal was not a particularly large deal in terms of amount, it was somewhat complex for other reasons, and these guys really hung in there with us as we worked through some of the more detailed points. They are both very sophisticated and also very honest and straightforward.
I will avoid echoing some of the other posts (I agree with everything) but would make one additional point. It was very impressive how Brian made it a point to get up to speed on our space. Toward the end of the diligence process, he made a trip to a convention with management, and it truly felt like he was a "part of the team" during several of the meetings. He contributed often and always in an insightful, value-additive way. Although he does not come from the medical world with his operating background, I can attest to the fact that this point has made little difference to us ... I have found that in a short time, he has become very sophisticated with regard to our industry.

Received and unsolicited call from an associate from Insight Venture Partners. The associate seemed to be intelligent and understand our space. Said that we came to their attention from one of their portfolio companies. Careful not to share too much information. Stated that they have a market cap of $3.2B and invest $8-100M. Wanted to keep in touch when we were closer to our "A" round next year. Ambivalent about them given the limited interaction.

Received an unsolicited call from Index. Pitched an associate from Geneva over the phone. The associate was thoughtful, understood our solution and market and asked some good questions. We set the stage for an "A" round next year, but did crack the door for a smaller seed investment. We concluded the conversation with them getting back to us in a few days, he wanted to run it up the flag pole with others at his firm. Kept his word and indeed got back to us. They declined seed, but most definitely wanted to follow our progress and have an opportunity to consider our "A" round. They were cautious about investing in US companies given the distance. Thumbs up so far given the limited interaction.

I pitch Jo recently and went through some preliminary due diligence with a friend of the firm. Jo seems smart and to the point and he declined quickly (which was appreciated).

We just closed our seed round with Coker. I have been quite happy working with Mark and with John. The fund is new, and TheraKine doesn't fit into the usual box, so it took about five months from pitch to close. If you are in the South East looking for early phase med-tech money, you should talk to them, they aren't part of the Secret Handshake Club that used to dominate Atlanta biotech. I like that they are willing to get in very early with smaller amounts: innovators with promising ideas should definitely give them a call.
