Went Smoothly, Good Investor

We had a good experience with DoCoMo Capital.
Rakesh Sood reached out to us, as we were starting our round. We came in and pitched to Rakesh, Daisuke Minamide and Yasuhiro Mita. Daisuke became our main point of contact. Their due diligence was thorough but fairly quick. They co-invested with another VC. There were no surprises and they were quite patient even when we had to delay a few steps to accommodate our other investors. Daisuke has since been quite helpful with detailed introductions to NTT DoCoMo and other Japanese firms.
If you have a mobile-related product, it makes a lot of sense to talk to DoCoMo. I don't think they want to lead rounds, but they're a great co-investor.

We worked with Rakesh and his team throughout our funding process. Rakesh was one of the first VC's we talked to and since NTT likes to come in along side and not lead a deal, he introduced us to more than 10 different funds. We ultimately received a term sheet from a Tier-1 VC and Rakesh made good on his word and NTT came in along side the Tier 1 investor. If you have a mobile angle at all in your product, NTT and Rakesh are a good use of time. He will make intros and work for you if he likes your idea and the rest of his Japanese counter parts see your vision.

We got introduced to Rakesh Sood at DoCoMo Capital. He had us come in right away (within a day of being introduced to us) as he was leaving for Japan the next week. We had to re-organize our schedule to accomodate him. But we thought we should do what we can to help with their time.
We pitched our idea to him. He had also brought two of his Japanese technical advisors with him who were busy taking notes throughout the meeting and had quite a few technical questions at the end (the answers to which were added to the notes). They said they were interested in hearing more and would get back to us after pitching to their partners in Japan (they even asked us for a copy of our slides that they could use to explain to their partners).
The bad part was that they never got back to us. Repeated pings (emails and voicemail messages) were left un-answered. We personally find Rakesh Sood's behavior downright bordering on the un-professional. Our advice would be to avoid them. Our perception seems to be that they are a front organization that filters ideas and feeds them to technical teams in DoCoMo. Lord knows what they do with these ideas.
