    Where There'S Smoke, Go Elsewhere...

    Fund: Southern Capitol Ventures

    Posted by JAGBCL on 2007-10-14

    PUBLIC:

Jason Caplain is a fish out of water, a quant by nature, which explains why their first investment went south really, really fast. Without a second cash infusion from a first investor (while 'Fund I' was still being raised, in spite of a dismal first investment in a company which was bankrupt), this fund wouldn't even be here. In other words, he blows a lot of smoke, which I guess someone told him was cool to do as a VC. It isn't.

I mean, look at their 'Firm Overview". Geez - Hummer Winblad's is shorter than that...

Having said that, I find that yes, Jason works hard, and no, his words don't match his actions. While he's happy to put on a 'bring any idea to us and we'll spend time with you' seminar with the founder of ChannelAdvisor, he also says that 'Ideas are really cheap'. Um, which is it?

Jason is a great hustler. Will do just about anything to help an entrepreneur even if he's not invested in the company. David is a superb VC in every sense of the word. Smaller fund but has invested in some excellent companies (early).

These guys know how to network. They are not only great individuals, but they are great at connecting people together. Definitely worth meeting with and getting their perspective early on in the process. Definitely agree with other comments that these guys work hard.

Have a reputation for early investing, but that doesn't square with what I've experienced...

Small firm, but a hard working group of investors. What they lack for in size they make up for in hustle and hard work

Even though we want to finish the beta release of our product before raising money, the team at Southern Capitol Ventures has been very helpful. They've made some key introductions that I greatly appreciate.
