Dubious Relationship with Rim
Fund: BlackBerry Partners Fund

Nice people, try hard, understand the market. But it's neither an interface into RIM, nor a separate financial entity with Chinese walls between them.

This fund was created in response to the iFund and, like the iFund, they target the platform of their namesake as the primary with others being acceptable. The downside of the BPF is they can offer no real help in the Valley although that may change when they open an office there. The process is the same as any other fund with most of the existing partners being guys that will think it to death so be prepared to have a mountain of data and another mountain to back up that data. Since the partners are all money guys (no insult here), it's about metrics and not cool. Kevin Tablot is technical to the extent he loves the stuff and can hold his own in a technical conversation on mobile products, infrastructure, etc. All the partners are very smart and suffer the same ills that most VCs suffer. They take forever to get to a no, blow dates ("call you tomorrow"), and often times will not give you the reasons for no beyond the not a fit.
The good news is these guys do play straight and aim to be professional but understand they are not in the valley so plan on an East Coast funding attack plan.
