Castile is Dead Bye Bye Nina

Fund: Castile Ventures

Posted by Anonymous on 2013-12-23

PUBLIC:

This was a bad firm - now it is gone. Typical boom time firm without a real purpose or team. Everyone on Boston knows it.

Nina talks more than any VC I know... and makes no sense.

I have had to roll my eyes many times and hold myself back from laughing..

Goodbye.

Heard a rumor that Castile can't raise another fund.... No surprise.

All good news for New England entrepreneurs.

Carl S

Fund: Castile Ventures

Posted by ER@SV on 2012-01-10

PUBLIC:

I have known Carl for 3+ years as an Investor/ Board Member. Carl is an exceptionally sharp VC, who takes the time to understand the business details and will provide direct / honest inputs. He is very well connected and is happy to use his rolodex as appropriate. He is a high integrity individual and I would be honored to work with Carl and Castile Ventures again.

Shameless

Fund: Castile Ventures

Posted by Anonymous on 2011-02-20

PUBLIC:

During Castile Ventures' evaluation of my company, I was made to meet one of their portfolio companies that works in the same market. I was made to meet their board member as well. Castile had about 7 meetings with me, my staff and my head of technology. At the end of the process, Castile declined to invest with a very weak explanation to why.

A few months later, I saw that their portfolio company has pivoted to a very similar business as my own. That is outrageous and apparently they are shameless. I employ entrepreneur not to work with Castile!

Great Help

Fund: Castile Ventures

PUBLIC:

These guys+Nina were a great help in my last venture. While my firm was to early for institutional money, they opened up their Rolodex and connected me to numerous potential Angels. While in the end, the market was not ready for our product, I would recommends any early stage east coast firm speak with this team.

Open Minded

Fund: Castile Ventures

Posted by Matt Eagar on 2008-01-30

PUBLIC:

Had an introductory call with Carl Stjernfeldt. He listened attentively and asked good questions. Consumer markets are not really his thing (same for most VCs on the East Coast), but he gave our ideas some good thought and had constructive feedback to offer. Carl struck me as genuine and respectful of the work that we are trying to do.

Carl Stjernfeldt

Fund: Castile Ventures

PUBLIC:

I know Carl from his Battery days. He funded my company's A-round, B-round, and was an active board member from day zero. Carl comes across initially as very direct; however, he generally gets right to the heart of a problem. He added a lot of value from both a business/marketing and a technology perspective. There are VC's I would never work with again -- Carl is not one of them. I would work with him again in a heartbeat -- which really says it all.

PUBLIC:

I left this post about Carl under Battery, but I figure it makes more sense to paste here as well.

---------
Carl Stjernfeldt (now with Castile) is a brutally honest, direct, no-nonsense kind of guy. He has demonstrated his ability to focus on the core issues and work with us to address them effectively, whether we are dealing with operational, financial, or BD related issues. You may find his personality "strong", but I have found that just as he can dish it, he is willing to take it. I consider him a friend and valued colleague.

Interactions with Carl Stjernfeldt

Fund: Castile Ventures

Posted by Anonymous on 2007-11-02

PUBLIC:

I raised my series A round of funding when Carl Stjernfeldt was still with Battery Ventures. Carl served on our board for several years, and he worked closely with our company during series B and subsequent rapid growth of our business. Carl is organized, sharp and very thorough in conducting due diligence. Carl's technical background in the communications and software spaces is impressive; he projects a common-sense approach to business that is grounded in personal experience ... very refreshing in the VC business. His reputation for pointed no-nonsense questions and valuable insights is well deserved.

We met with Carl when he was with Battery and again recently after he joined Castile. Carl is by far one of the most intelligent and insightful VC's that we have spoken to, and we have spoken to many. He asks intelligent questions. He does a lot of research before the meeting and is quick to acknowledge areas that he does not know as opposed to pontificating on those subject matter like other VC's.
