PUBLIC:

Pitched an associate over the phone after an intro from a service provider. She was easy to get on the phone, and listened, but did not seem to actually hear what I was saying. In the end it felt like she wanted information that would make their own investments/ interests more competitive, rather than focusing on what I was offering.

Very Positive Experience

I met Atul Kapadia, who I have known for several years with my business plan. He was the second venture capitalist I met. At the end of the meeting, he went and talked to the other two partners and immediately fixed a follow-up meeting. Within three weeks, we had a bridge note and office space to develop our business plan and introduction to three top-tier potential syndicate partners. One of them declined and Atul immediately told me to stop wasting time.
As soon as the first one (Redpoint) got to the finish line, we closed our bridge. There was a milestone attached to closing the bridge round. The milestone was delayed but we were making good progress on the business. Both Atul and John, in the Board meeting, asked me to focus on the business and not the financing and closed the round.
In addition, Atul and John recognized that I was light on options. They proposed and verbally promised they'd take care of it after the round closed which they did. Atul introduced me to a high class seasoned outside Board member but never pushed to bring him on. The Board meetings are focused on the key elements that will make the business successful. The responsiveness and assistance I have from my two venture capitalists is beyond my expectations.

Sandesh Too Busy

Met with 3 at Bay, Salil, Sandesh, and an EIR. Salil seems to be a great guy. Very responsive and follows up. We were handed off to Sandesh, who after a number of attempts to reach never responded. We even tried to book a follow up call with his assistant. In the end, pinged Salil and finally heard from Sandesh saying sorry I've been too busy. I've seen mixed reviews of Bay, and for the moment i'll remain neutral, but be warned.

I felt like I had a positive initial meeting with Angela Strange, she expressed interest but had some reservations. Her answer came back quickly as a pass, but without a good enough reason for me to believe we ever had a chance for anything but competitive intelligence.

I met Eric at a dinner, was re-introduced through a mutual friend, pitched my company and then never heard back. No response to any of my emails. Nothing. This is my biggest pet peave when it comes to VCs.

It often seems VC's are just focused on a deal Y/N rather than on actually building meaningful professional relationships for the purposes of making a social capital deposit. Salil Deshpande of Bay partners is a great exception, but then again he's a proper entrepreneur / operator with a track record.

Overall Bay makes fresh high pace impression.
