Wasted My Time

Fund: North Bridge Venture Partners

Posted by Anonymous on 2007-08-16

PUBLIC:

I was very disappointed when trying to raise money during mid-2003 from NorthBridge. The partner I met with wasted my time, offered little strategic business insight, and tried to knowingly push crappy terms across the table. Read more in the private section.

Waste of Time

The more seasoned partners seem very knowledgeable about their domain and provide good feedback when you can actually connect with them, which is hard. The more recently added partner I finally met with face to face was nice, but talked about himself a lot and didn't listen well or ask questions.

Basil Horangic

I had the opportunity as a founder to work with Basil Horangic from seed stage through Series C while he was at Austin Ventures. If Basil is on board with your project he will support it and the team 110%. Getting him on board takes some doing, he's a strong analytical with a keen sense of what it takes find an optimum. His involvement will make your product/project/deal/whatever stronger. He's also a pragmatic VC who always gave it to me straight and he will listen. Be prepared when you pitch him and don't be intimidated by the cross examination, you will learn much from the process.

Straight Shooters, Helpful with Introductions

Fund: North Bridge Venture Partners

Posted by matthew_monahan on 2010-08-29

PUBLIC:

We interacted mostly with Matt Blodgett and Cali Tran over at North Bridge. It was our first time raising money and both of these guys were honest and straightforward with us. They were on time for meetings, fulfilled their commitments, and always friendly. They also made several useful business development intros.

Though we ultimately didn't do a deal together, I would call Matt and Cali again and recommend them to other entrepreneurs. Good guys.

Fundamental Difference of Opinion, but Professional and Straightforward

Fund: North Bridge Venture Partners

Posted by Dicky Betts on 2010-06-09

PUBLIC:

They were straightforward and upfront about what types of companies they prefer to invest in. We didn't meet their criteria, and appreciated their frankness. It was an hour that could have been avoided and used otherwise.

Not a Waste of Time

I'm commenting on the last post (more in Private) that I have found the partners at North Bridge to be complete professionals. I have had the fortune to meet with them a handful of times, and they have introduced me (without any consideration of funding) to leader's in both technology and industry. They have been more instrumental in my firms success then the other eight or so VC's combined.

Was the Demo a Mistake?

Fund: North Bridge Venture Partners

Posted by xndk8d on 2008-02-05

PUBLIC:

I am the founder of a bootstrapped web app company with a pre beta product. An NBVP partner introduced me to EIR/CEO of new company in my same market. Went to meeting at NBVP office and met founders of new company. I opened the meeting by voicing my concern about opening the kimono to a newly funded company in my space. The CEO stated that they had the same concern and that he would stop the meeting if it became clear that we were working on similar ideas. I ended up showing my full demo to great interest on their part. The pumped me for answers on many subjects. When it came time for them to discuss their offering, the meeting ended. I was told that they would have the VP of marketing contact me to discuss partnership opportunities. Weeks have gone by with no contact. I did a follow up email to the CEO but have yet to receive a response. Should I be concerned" Update: just received a contact to continue the discussion with the SVP marketing, so my concern has abated at this point.

I recently received assistance from Basil Horangic of North Bridge Venture Partners. Although his fund does not invest in deals such as the one I'm currently working on, he offered to introduce me to other funds. In addition, before he made these introductions to some of his competitors, he gave me very tips on how to prepare an Executive Summary/Elevator Pitch to be forwarded to these other funds.
