TheFunded Connect, a free service to streamline fundraising, has sealed its first deal. JS-Kit, a developer of professional widgets for publishers, closed a $3.6 MM Series B financing on October 10th with Altos Ventures. The JS-Kit introduction to Altos Ventures reflects some common trends in the Connect service:

(1) Altos replied to JS-Kit within three hours of being introduced, and the average investor response time is less than 48 hours.
(2) The first face-to-face pitch was set-up five days after the introduction, and the average time to set-up a meeting or call is less than 10 days, if the investor is interested.

Moments ago, a Member of TheFunded.com allowed a venture capitalist to use their login credentials and post this Open Letter on TheFunded.com. Such unauthorized access is considered a serious violation of the terms of service, so the Member account in question has been suspended. The specific terms violated are:

Members agree not to share their username and password with anyone. Any employee, member, partner, director in a venture capital fund or other sources of capital for companies is strictly forbidden under these Terms and Conditions from entering TheFunded.com with a username and password or viewing Member-only "Private" information from the TheFunded, and any violation is considered extremely damaging to TheFunded.com, making said party liable for any damages that face TheFunded.com in any matter under the fullest extent of the law in any applicable jurisdiction.

TheFunded.com takes extensive measures to (1) screen all Membership applications to ensure that every Member is qualified as NOT working in venture capital or as a full-time investor and (2) protect the anonymity of the Membership to ensure that each Member can speak freely. This is a commitment that TheFunded.com makes to the Membership, and the hope is that each Member understands and respects the importance of anonymity and secure access.

Nonetheless, with over 9,000 Members, there have been documented cases where Members have copied and pasted feedback and snippets of Private comments in emails to venture capitalists. There have also been documented cases of Member CEOs becoming EIRs (see the feedback on this post).

In response, TheFunded.com has just introduced the ability for any Member that may be in violation of the terms of service to WITHDRAW their Membership account. After you login as a Member, there is now a WITHDRAW option next to the LOGOUT option. We ask that any Member who has (1) shared their login credentials, (2) works as a full-time investor, or (3) started working or works in venture capital immediately WITHDRAW their Membership account.

Based on the reasonable nature of the post in question, TheFunded.com will introduce functionality to allow venture capitalists and full-time investors to post Discussion items for Membership commentary. Obtaining the login credentials of a portfolio CEO is not the way to accomplish this goal. Any further ideas are welcomed by submitting feedback or by adding feedback to this post below. [UPDATE at 4:00 PM PST] TheFunded.com has introduced functionality that now allows any professional investor with a Certified Profile to post an Open Letter under the "Letters" section and see all replies in the Feedback by the Membership. The original post has been designated as a public sample to see how this new openness works.

TheFunded.com just broke 9,000 Members moments ago. Over 95% of the Members continue to be CEOs, with less than 5% being founders in other roles, lawyers, consultants, and limited partners. TheFunded.com continues to carefully screen Members to reject any attempts by venture capitalists or full-time angel investors to access the site and the Private comments.

An increasing number of venture capitalists are leaving the VC industry and joining start-ups. Rather than deleting the profile of a former venture capitalist or investor, TheFunded archives the profile in a Transitional Zone.

In celebration of this milestone, TheFunded has added an easy way for early stage companies to look up Angel investors. There is now a Filter option to show only self-declared Angels in the left hand navigation, which can be further tuned by selecting a Geography. Early stage companies raising smaller amounts of capital can now see all relevant angel groups and their ratings.

TheFunded has introduced functionality that allows any Member to change their login name and password at will. Members now see an "Edit Username / Password" link next to the "Logout" button at the top of every page. The ability to change a login name to something more anonymous is part of the ongoing commitment by TheFunded to provide a safe environment for CEOs to discuss the true nature of their investor relationships without threat of censorship. The login name stored by TheFunded is the only piece of information that may be able to identify a Member. For example, a Member may chose an email address or a full name as a login. After the new login name is posted, old login names are neither stored nor are the changes logged.

A number of interface enhancements have been launched on TheFunded Connect, including the ability to browse by Industry and Geography. Less than 30 days after the launch of TheFunded Connect, two of the original five companies have received investment terms. TheFunded.com hopes to announce these success stories as more details become available. TheFunded Connect has added some new enhancements to handle the volume of companies entering the program. You can now sort the companies (1) by name, (2) by the number of supporters, and (3) by when the pitch was last updated. It is also easier for Members to vote for and support a company pitch. A large red number on the right shows the number of supporters, and a "Support It" link allows you to easily cast your vote.

Your vote counts, since each 'Draft' pitch needs 5 supporters to go 'Live.' There are now 46 'Draft' pitches, one of which has four votes, three of which have three votes, and many have two votes. The 85 pieces of Member feedback submitted to these companies is helping them better prepare for fundraising. Your vote and your feedback can make a difference.

Please add any other suggestions on how to improve TheFunded Connect to this post. One proposed idea is to hold regional events, allowing the these fundraising CEOs to meet others and facilitate introductions. TheFunded Connect has undergone regular design and functionality improvements to support the high volume of interest over the last five days since launch. 65 companies have uploaded pitches, and the 7 'Live' pitches have already received 27 introductions to funding sources. 52 more introductions are sought.

All of the recent improvements are designed to ensure that each pitch gets feedback and the best pitches go 'Live.' More features are on the way, and every Member is invited to upload a pitch. There are currently 21 'New' pitches awaiting final edits and selection of funding targets before they become a formal 'Draft.'
