Tail End of Their Fund

Fund: Commonwealth Capital Ventures

Posted by provee1 on 2013-02-05

PUBLIC:

These folks are at the very end of their current fund, which is making them very choosy about what the last investment or two will be. As a result, they have made only two investments in the last two years.

Ah Beginning to Believe Their Own B.S. and Behaving Like Prima Donnas.

Fund: Andreessen Horowitz

Posted by Yin & Yang on 2013-02-01

PUBLIC:

When Marc and Ben decided to start a full venture fund, I was incredibly excited. I knew these guys would shake up the old guard and bring in a fresh approach to the VC business. Early success and reviews indicate that good times were ahead. Marc and Ben were both considerate, quick to respond and respectful of entrepreneurs. However, now that the firm has grown and AH has seen even more success, stardom and its effects have begun to show in the way they conduct business. Graciousness has been replaced by arrogance, timely follow up replaced by long silence. As an entrepreneur who has been funded top VC firms and have returned hundreds of millions to shareholders, I think I qualify to write a critique. My advice to Marc and Ben is to have a long talk with their staffers and make sure they stop drinking the prima donna Kool-Aid and behaving like jack-asses. Nobody likes to be disrespected, and you can be sure that if it keeps up, it will catch up to you. AH is the shiny new VC at the moment, but that can change. Look at what to KPCB and what is currently happening to Benchmark. People want to be treated with respect and that above is what they will remember about your firm.

Promised Follow Up and Feedback Never Happened

Fund: Bay City Capital

Posted by MedTech Expert on 2013-01-30

PUBLIC:

We pitched BCC at their request. Met with Jeanne Cucinelli, MBA, and one other. They asked good questions and were interactive. Pitch experience was positive. They promised to take it to the partnership for an initial screen. Never heard back, despite their promise to do so and several calls. While they claim to have money to invest (as do many others), our sense was that they are being very conservative and are protecting existing investments (as are many others). Suggest that entrepreneurs engage cautiously as this proved to be a big waste of time and energy (others have said the same). BTW, we did get funded.

Poor at Following Up

Fund: GreenHills Ventures

Posted by Anonymous on 2013-01-21

PUBLIC:

I was contacted by one of the GreenHills' analysts, Sumit. He informed me they found my company's profile on Gust and were interested because they had just made an investment in a similar space and thought there were some synergies between our companies. Initially, this confused me because after describing what their new portfolio company did, it didn't seem to be very compatible. I asked Sumit for some references, which he said he would get together over the weekend and send over a few days later. About a week later, I received a call from Manny. He told me he wasn't sure why he was calling, other than because Sumit asked him to. They didn't seem very organized. He pitched me GreenHills, I described a little of what my business does, and then I asked for a few references that I could speak with, perhaps the company they just invested in as well. Of course, I never received any contacts to reach out to or letters of reference. This firm seems to be disorganized and poor at following up on their promises. Not the type of money I would want involved in my business. I would suggest doing thorough research with any VC firm and their partners before moving the process forward or you could be strung along as in this example.

Responded to Pitch Immediately

Fund: Rustic Canyon Ventures

Posted by ommegang on 2013-01-17

PUBLIC:

Pitched Nate Redmond - really liked him. He was on time, personable, seemed down to earth. He asked intelligent questions, understood our larger market fairly well, and drilled down on the right things. I think that's why I liked him most - he asked the right questions.

He gave me a quick no, said we were too early for their fund. Makes me think you need to be a solid A round (raising 2mm+) before they will invest.

Great Experience, Class Act

Fund: MeriTech Capital Partners

Posted by Anonymous on 2013-01-15

PUBLIC:

Pitched these guys recently. Specifically, Craig Sherman and George Bischof. They were smart, insightful, and most surprising, could not have been more welcoming, supportive and genuinely interested. These guys made you want to work with them. Unfortunately for us, we were a bit too early for them and they passed but not until Craig called me and spent another 30 minutes on the phone explaining their decision. Class acts all around. Hope to have the chance to work with them at some point. This is what you hope a VC experience is like...
